Time is Running Out to Save Money on Energy Costs!

The following might seem strange in this time of social distancing due to Covid-19. But I would argue now is the BEST time, as this will provide some great opportunities for you, and begin a new start when everyone returns.  And despite the many shutdowns, the program has been running throughout, and is slated to run out of funding very soon.       



Do-Gooder Consulting is excited to once again partner with Global Generation Group , a service provider / trade ally of Commonwealth Edison.  We are charged with implementing Com-Ed’s 2020 Small Business energy efficiency program (their definition of small business includes churches and nonprofits; this program is a different department than their residential energy efficiency program, which has been advertised in the media). Global Generation specializes in helping organizations finding no cost improvements to upgrade their facilities with energy efficient equipment.    



The Com-Ed Energy Efficiency Program for Small Businesses is paid for by an energy charge on EVERYONE’s bill).  See the graphic to check your own bill to see these state-mandated charges. 


This special program (paid for by an energy charge on EVERYONE’s bill) gives no-cost upgrades that include:
  

1. LED replacements of fluorescent lights (for certain types, determined by Com-Ed after free energy assessment)

2. HVAC upgrade (installing an economizer & sensors to help HVAC units pull in less air – and use less energy—when fewer or no people are in an area. This is called Demand Control Ventilation - DCV) 

3. Occupancy sensors that turn off/on lights automatically (such as for a bathroom).

4. Weather stripping for outer doors.

 The qualifications are simple – you pay an electric bill every month, which is classified at “Retail/Commercial = 0 to 100KW), and you are a small business, church or nonprofit. You can easily see if you qualify by checking your bill.


 We at Do-Gooder Consulting would like to do a walk-through of your facility (which proper precautions -- we do NOT need to touch anything) with you  sometime in the next two weeks and help you get these no cost upgrades.

My name is JP Paulus, and I am president of DO-Gooder Consulting, which aims to serve churches, nonprofits and small businesses to "help you help others." I am now partnering with Global Generation Group, which is a trade ally with Com-Ed (the electric company). There are one of several organizations which are administering the Small Business Energy Saving program, which help small businesses, as well as churches and nonprofits, by replacing their current light bulbs and some fixtures with more energy efficient options.

Most of the work is free. There may  optional (and I like to stress  that_”optional”  portion) repairs we might be authorized to do at a subsidized cost.  We are required to put it in the assessment, but you are absolutely free to refuse any work.

This program is mostly free (and otherwise subsidized) because you have already paid for this program. Look for the line “Energy Efficiency Programs  “ on your electric bill, under “taxes & Fees”.

Here’s the process of how this program works:.

1. I (and perhaps with a colleague) will visit your building.
2. We will need a copy of your Com-Ed bill (just one from the past couple of months)
3. We will go over  the bill to make sure that you qualify (such as being classified as a NON-residential property, using 0-100KW range)
4. (We will also need a photocopy of that bill to submit with paperwork, see below)
5. We then have a form that needs to be filled out.
6.  We will then walk through your facility and make an assessment, noting any bulbs and fixtures we can upgrade.
7. Our office will then process the assessment and produce a report  (usually within 1 week).
8. I will bring that to you, and you can sign off on any upgrades you want (or reject what you do not want, such as anything where you have to pay money, or ones you haven’t planned/budgeted for ).
9.  Once we submit the final paperwork,  you will be approved by Com-Ed to receive our services and they will have money set aside to make those changes.
10. Once the funds come in (usually a 2-3 week wait), we will begin work, which takes a short time depending on size , complexity, and schedule . It is usually between 1 day and two weeks at the latest.

If you have anyone you could refer me to, I would greatly appreciate it. The word is that the program can run out of funds as early as October, so time is of the essence.

Struggling non-profits should consider a merger

The Center for Youth Ministry Studies does a lot of work to help educate and empower those in the non-profit world. Associate Director Alison Burkhardt posted an article on Facebook, and is a thought provoking and challenging article.

If you're a struggling non-profit you may want to take some time and read  The Stanford Social Innovation Review missed merger opportunity, and consider how that impacts your world.

This can be especially hard for churches, as they may have significant assets , such as a building, that could help.

We have observed, certainly in Chicago, a multitude of organizations. However,  they are often so stretched thin, that if they merged, they might be able to more effectively help people. In addition, funds could be more focused.

A merger can help allow those with a passion to do good, to continue to do it. But sharing resources can cut down on administrative costs (as one example), and allow the hiring of an administrative expert, with the gifts and passion to help in this overlooked area.

Join us August 1 for the FREE Illinois College Access Network Conference @ North Park University

JP Paulus will be a co-presenter for a workshop during the Illinois College Access Network conference in Chicago on Thursday, August 1. He will join Jeremy Barahona of PURSUE Scholars to talk about "Developing Faith-Based College Access Partnerships", based on our experience with churches, nonprofits and networking.

The aim of the conference is to help those who work with youth (and adults) get them to college, and to connect resources together to help our whole state improve our college graduation rates.

Other presenters, perhaps familiar to our readers, include Professor Daniel White Hodge from North Park's Center for Youth Ministry Studies.

The conference is free, but they ask that you RSVP, in order to plan for the FREE continental breakfast and lunch. Simply send an e-mail to illinoiscollegeaccessnetwork@gmail.com with basic details (i.e. how many are going, what organization you are with, if any)

The conference is on Thursday, August 1, from 8am - 2pm at North Park University, 3225 W. Foster Avenue (in the Carlson Tower building).  Free parking is available at the lot on the southeast corner of Kedzie and Foster.

.church web extention coming in 2013

Earlier this year we talked to you about web domain extensions OTHER than .com, .net , .org or .edu


Two companies that are bidding to win control of the .church extension informed Do-Gooder Consulting (back between June 26-28) that they could start opening up that website extension in early 2013.

So today, if you were going to try for First Baptist Church of Chicago, you might have to go with something like FBChurchof Chicago.com  

That's a mouthful, and the odds are very good that people interested in the church will NOT remember the web domain name, and not look up that ebsite.

However, if we are able to take advantage of the new domain names, we could get a domain as easy to remember as www.firstbaptist.church

Call of Duty: Building Assets Every Student Needs
(Junior High Adult Leader Track)

This track will teach how to build sustainable assets for Junior High Students and interface with realities without being controlled by them.  As a youth worker, our relational time with students is minimal; therefore, it is important for us to focus on the right things.  Kingdom ministry to students shifts our efforts to play it forward by teaching them to spend less time trying to control problems and troubles…in an exchange to visit their capabilities in strength and potential.  Students must learn the value in not being a joystick to the challenges in their lives.

Teen Track:  A Facebook Without Love

In years past, sex, alcohol, and drugs were a few of the leading influencers that “helped” teens feel as if they were gaining ground relationally with other students.  When these were coupled with media and music, it seemed like adults were always 10 steps away from a youth’s daily reality.  In today’s world, teens can connect visually without ever having to confront who they really are!  In fact, through social media avenues, teens can bypass life – yet still feel alive and in the mix!  This session will remind students of who they really are, and how loving themselves first will help them lead their lives into a personal book they can face forever.
